Because of course he is.

This post contains discussion of rape, suicide, and child sex abuse.

Taking a brief detour from the Definitive Guide to Incels (which you can find here and here), I want to post an update on Incelocalypse, the pro-rape and pro-paedophilia forum which was delisted by hosting service DreamHost earlier this week after lobbying from r/IncelTears and others, who pointed out that it was hosting child pornography (or at least graphic descriptions of it).

Nathan Larson: Congressional candidate, paedophile

Nathan Larson is running as an independent for Congress in Virginia. He's an accountant. He has a three year old daughter (who lives with relatives) and is married. He is also an admitted paedophile who has fantasised about raping his ex-wife (now deceased, from suicide) repeatedly and father-daughter incest.

Nathan ran two sites, suiped and incelocalypse, on which he posted prolifically about rape and paedophilia. He wrote a 3,300 word essay called "How To Psyche Yourself Up To Feel Entitled to Rape".

There's a lot to be said about the depths American politics has begun to plumb such that men feel they are able to openly advocate for rape and paedophilia and run for office. However, I want to keep the focus relatively tight, and analyse what this says about the incel community.

What does this say about the incel community?

After Larson's sites were taken down, he took to popular incel forum incels.me to complain. Some users there accused him of being a fakecel - not really an incel, but someone who pretended to be one in order to get status or other benefits. This term usually applies to men whom incels consider too attractive to be really incel, but in this instance it was Larson's wife and child that likely disqualified him.

But aside from this opprobrium, I've noted elsewhere that Larson's forum gained some popularity amongst the incel community. Whilst it hadn't quite taken off hugely, there were a number of secret forums which users could request to join in which they could discuss and disseminate child pornography. Some users of incels.me complained that they hadn't had quite enough time on the "pedocel" subforum to get their fill. And whilst other parts of the forum were quite quiet, there was nary a whisper that Larson might have been wrong to advocate for rape so openly, even if some of them weren't quite on board with the paedophilia.

As pointed out by one user on r/IncelTears, the reason that Larson chose the incel community to post in rather than anywhere else is likely because it was the only place in which the idea of sexually abusing children and raping women was not a complete non-starter. Once you've accepted that women are fundamentally corrupt creatures who are barely deserving of human status - calling them femoids, or foids, or voids, or just v because that's all they are to you - it's a very small step to arguing that they deserve to be raped. From there, the distinction between an adult woman and a teenage girl becomes porous: incels subscribe to an ideology inspired by evolutionary psychology which (among other things) says that young women are the most fertile and desirable. It's only natural that men desire them. And "hebephilia" (attraction to pubescent girls) is only really a short hop from paedophilia - you're already on the wrong side of the law, and women are inherently evil (All Women Are Like That), and the world has treated you so badly and has no meaning, so why should there be a blanket moral prohibition on sex with children? The gradient of dehumanisation only gets steeper as you go down, because you feel like downwards is the only direction in which you'll find either solace or revenge on a world you believe has wronged you.

On reflection, it should be utterly unsurprising that a professed paedophile thought that he could find kindred spirits on an incel forum. It's even less surprising that he was right. Expect to see more of this.

How do we counter this?

I posted the Incel A-Z on reddit. One of the responses I got to the idea that incels shouldn't blame women for their problems was, "what, so they're just supposed to blame white men, like everyone else for everything else?"

The answer is "kind of". One of the oddities of the incel community (and many related communities) is that whilst they're very keen on biological and naturalistic explanations for social phenomena, they refuse to brook any explanation which hinges on social construction. It might be because such explanations have been thoroughly soiled by the right's obsession with "cultural Marxism", or because they think they're grounded in feelings rather than facts, but it seems impossible to be a member of a group that tends right-wing without being fundamentally sociologically illiterate.

Accepting the existence of an abstract concept - the patriarchy, or systemic oppression, or whatever you want to call it - doesn't necessitate the entire offloading of blame on to individual white men. What it does require is for you to accept that, even though you may feel like the world is shitting on you, there are still other people who have it worse. Incels should be fine with that! After all, you can be a virgin but not be kissless. You can be an incel but not a heightcel, wristcel, and so on.

Moreover, you have to accept that individuals aren't always entirely responsible for their own actions, because those actions don't happen in a vacuum. Structures and systems are built over decades and centuries, through every social and political institution, in such a way that men are likely to act in such a way, and women are likely to act in other ways. Yes, women do by and large prefer white men. But that's not because women are hardwired to seek power and status. It's more because society has been built in such a way that women often have to seek men who will provide for them (which white men are more likely to be able to do, because society has also been built to favour them). It's also because we have all been conditioned to value particular traits associated with whiteness as the most beautiful.

The point is, systemic and structural explanations that appeal to sociological phenomena like patriarchy and white supremacy should be more convincing than the post-hoc evolutionary psychology explanation that just says that women are a bit evil because they've been genetically programmed that way. Different cultures in different times and places have had an enormous variety of ways of organising society, and men and women have not all behaved in the same way in every one. If you care about facts and evidence, but you also like neat evo psych explanations, then that should concern you.

The question I have is this: how do we make sociological explanations of why these men are celibate but feel so much like they need sex, more appealing and more intuitive than the explanations which allow them to entirely absolve themselves of blame and externalise it on to women? I don't have the answers yet. Let me know if you have ideas.
