Activities and Interests

President, Cambridge Union Society (Michaelmas 2014)

I was a trustee-director ini charge of a £9.5m charity, and elected President of the oldest continually running debating society in the world, as well as the largest student society at the University of Cambridge. From June-December 2014 I planned and executed a term's worth of events, including weekly debates on a range of topics, each of which had ~6 high profile guest speakers, as well as 25 individual guest speakers including Robert Downey Jr, Pussy Riot and Alec Baldwin, and a ball run on a £10,000 budget for 600 people. I managed a team of ~50 student volunteers and ten full-time paid staff, overseeing recruitment of over 1000 new members, press, publicity, event management and guest liaison. In addition, I chaired the weekly debates (videos available at the Cambridge Union Society YouTube channel), and interviewed multiple guests during my time as Executive Officer, including Frank Turner and the Israeli Ambassador Daniel Taub (the latter of which also involved managing multiple security teams and a protest from the Palestinian Society).

Debate Editor & Columnist, Cambridge Tab (2013-2014)

I solicited, edited, wrote and published 4-5 articles per week for the country's most-read student newspaper. These included my own articles about mental health in Cambridge in which I discussed my own depression and attempted to begin conversations about service provision and pressures upon students at the university. I still write periodically about mental health. My articles about freedom of speech, No Platform policies and the "right to offend" have resulted in my involvement in multiple national conversations on these topics, including appearances on BBC Radio 4 and at the Oxford Union (the latter of which has earned me a number of death threats and various other forms of online harassment).

Competitive Debating (2012-present)

I have extensive experience in both speaking and judging. I was on the convening team for the Cambridge Intervarsity Competition in 2012 and 2013, which is one of the largest debating competitions in the world. I won the Transatlantic Debating Championships in 2013, the Aberdeen Open in 2016, and Maynooth Open in 2017, and have reached the finals of numerous competitions as well as reaching the knock-out rounds of the European Universities Debating Championships. I have judged debates from schools level up to the knock-out rounds of the world championships, going as far as Dubai to judge schools debating, Russia to be the Chief Adjudicator of the Moscow Open, a university-level tournament, and Greece to judge the World Universities Debating Championships. I also toured the east coast of the USA with the Cambridge Union in 2015, speaking at numerous universities in a variety of debates. I teach competitive debating at the Edinburgh University Debates Union, hosting training sessions from 1-3 times a week on a variety of topics.
